Hudson nos aporta datos sobre la falta de interés de los chinos por el arte europeo
del rococó: “If Peking was more or less impervious to the attractions of European art, it was
because nothing had yet happened to disturb the inner poise of Confucian scholar or to
undermine the ramparts of tradition; the mandarins were at once Church, State and
«Society», and their world was complete and self-sufficient. In France, with the uncertainty
and restlessness of mind which followed the deflation of the Baroque pride, there was
opportunity for the intrusion of the exotic.” 178 .
En este momento viene muy bien echar un vistazo al comentario de un artista chino,
Zou YiGui (1686-1772), quien tuvo oportunidad de ver muchas obras europeas realizadas o
traídas por los jesuitas, y que dijera,
The Westerners are skilled in geometry, and consequently
there is not the slightest mistake in their way of rendering light and
shade [yang-yin] and distance (near and far). In their paintings, all the
figures, buildings, and trees cast shadows, and their brush and
colours are entirely different from those of Chinese painters. Their
views (scenery) stretch out from broad (in the foreground) to narrow
(in the background) and are defined (mathematically measured).
When they paint houses on a wall people are tempted to walk into
them. Students of painting may well take over one or two points from
them to make their own paintings more attractive to the eye. But these
1743, el padre Attiret escribía a Paris: «he tenido que olvidar, por así decirlo, todo lo que he
aprendido, y he tenido que hacerme a una nueva manera para acomodarme al gusto de la nación...
Todo lo que pintamos es ordenado por el Emperador.»” Jean-Denis Attiret, de la orden jesuita, llega a
China en 1738. Este sacerdote era pintor, y dejó opiniones sobre el arte chino en general, muy
elogiosos en cuanto a la arquitectura, entre otros. Una de sus cartas, escrita en 1743 y publicada en
1749 en las Lettres édifiantes et curieuses, vol. XXVII –y más tarde traducida al inglés por Joseph
Spence-, dejó una huella importante en las mentes europeas acerca del elevado gusto chino en
jardinería y arquitectura.
