Está visto que la espontaneidad del pincel es un elemento de juicio en la obra de arte
china de capital importancia, y se explica en dos conceptos estéticos más: Ya y Su:
Ya literally means «elegant», «noble», and «refined», whereas
Su is «vulgar», «ostentatious», «artificial». These two terms refer
mainly to the style and taste of a work of art. If a work is shallow in
thought, if it is stereotyped, if it is brash, if it lacks harmony, it is Su.
No matter how skillfully executed the writing or painting may be, if the
work shows a Su flavor, it is deemed to lack artistic value, and
certainly would not be collected by a museum. On the other hand, an
inspired artist presenting his idea with honesty and sincerity will
probably produce a Ya work, whether it be a large ambitious
undertaking or a small piece composed merely of a few bold strokes.
The Ya or Su quality of an art work certainly reflects the artist’s
propensities and his inner character. 1487
Según Su Dongpo, ésta cita que referimos en breve, es la forma de pintar y de
recoger la esencia de las cosas; de una forma muy poética el artista describe el proceso de
penetración del modelo, en este caso el bambú. Se observa el énfasis que el poeta pone en
la necesidad de tener la idea muy clara en el corazón antes de pintar, y de comprender muy
bien la esencia de ese objeto, su vida, su energía, para así poder acometer el pincel de la
manera correcta. Entonces, el pincel es como un halcón que se abate sobre su presa:
The technique here lies primarily in achieving a certain state of
mind, such that the bamboo is fully realized in the mind before a
single stroke is on the paper, and the actual painting is done in utter
intensity like the hare leaping for its life or the falcon dropping onto his
prey. Su Shih has studied with the master and intellectually grasped

la pintura, si el trabajo tiene un gusto Su, se considera que le falta valor artístico, y ciertamente no
será adquirido por un museo. Por otro lado, un artista inspirado que represente su idea con honestidad
y sinceridad, probablemente producirá una obra Ya, ya sea una larga y ambiciosa tarea, o ya sea un
pequeño trabajo compuesto simplemente por unas pocas pinceladas audaces. La cualidad Ya o Su de
una obra de arte, ciertamente refleja las tendencias del carácter interior del artista.”
