hacen innecesario el empleo del claroscuro, o del sombreado. Otras cualidades plásticas son
tenidas en cuenta, y el panorama se entiende perfectamente sin necesidad de crear una
sensación volumétrica en la obra:
What is amazing is the way in which these painters [dinastía
Song], working in ink and water-colour, succeed in expressing the
conformation of the earth as well as the effects of atmosphere and of
distance, with a persuasion of reality not less than Western artists
achieve in the more solid medium of oils. They had inherited a
gradually matured technical tradition which trained them in the various
means of representation, they had an assured foundation of
craftsmanship; and this set them free to put their whole force into the
emotion they wished to communicate. It is by the quality of that
emotion no less than by their intellectual grasp that we judge of their

El artista chino, es sobre todo un individuo centrado en el talante lírico de su pintura,
en su capacidad empática, en la sugestión que producen los elementos descritos, en el
observador. Su fin no es el virtuosismo técnico, sino la expresión:

marshalling the quintessential reality and beauty of all-pervading life in
