This landscape art of Song has been called Romantic, and
also Idealistic. I sometimes wish that terms like these have never
been invented. They are useful to critics, but they often serve as
labels which we attach to artists or their works in order to dispense
with the trouble of further thinking. Let us attempt a little more
precision. These landscapes have been called Romantic, I suppose,
because they are conceived of as an escape from the realities of life.
Indeed their character has been explained by the fact that China has
suffered a great defeat; and though similar landscapes had been
painted before the Northern provinces were conquered, the
circumstances may have had some influence on the art. We in the
West called art and poetry Romantic when they deal with the strange
and remote, when they represent a rebellion from the routine of
existence, a craving for the wild, the marvelous, even the abnormal.
The Chinese poets and artists also rebel against the routine of
existence, since they were so often compelled to take up official posts;
but if they crave for the companionship of hills and streams, it is
because they are convinced that in such companionship the true life
of man is to be found. It is an escape not from life, but to life.
Therefore these paintings are mostly serene and exhilarating. 75
El hecho de centrar buena parte del estudio de esta tesis -en lo que a arte europeo se
refiere-, en el Romanticismo, se debe a varios factores: como el título de esta tesis indica, se
trata de un paseo del taoísmo hacia el Romanticismo, y es que es este último movimiento
artístico, el que mejor representa y engloba las similitudes entre ambos estilos de paisajismo

la existencia, desde que eran tan a menudo obligados a aceptar puestos oficiales, pero si anhelaban
como compañeros a colinas y arroyos, era porque estaban convencidos que en tal compañía se halla
la verdadera vida del hombre. No es un escape de la vida, sino hacia la vida. Por lo tanto esas
pinturas son en su mayoría serenas y estimulantes.”
