Ch’i painting must possess also a calligraphic flavor. […] Having been
influenced by Taoism, scholars through the centuries have been
lovers of nature, and have sought inspiration from mountains and
rivers. Meetings among literati in a rural setting have been enjoyed
and cherished at all times in Chinese history. The scholar-friends
drank together, painted together, and wrote poetry and calligraphy
together. 658
También significa que la obra posee coherencia, armonía interior, reflejada en la
vitalidad, o en la movilidad y energía espiritual de la obra resultante.
En cada dinastía, se suceden los pintores letrados wenren manteniendo su alta
posición social. Acerca de la figura del letrado asentada durante la dinastía Song, Barnhart
nos da su punto de vista sobre la relación que éstos tenían con el poder imperial, y su
situación en la estructura de poder:
This is the beginning of the powerful tradition of the scholarpainters
of China, men who stood just beside the imperial structure –
sometimes in fact just within it- and found the authority to comment
upon it, to look at it from their separate place, and to attempt to shape
it into a form closer to their interests and values. Such men were in
fact never very far from the center of the imperial power, were indeed
essential parts of that power, but were also closer to the common
reality of their times, closer sometimes to the interests of the great
landholders, whom they embodied and represented, and even in
some important ways closer to the interests of the common people,
upon whom they depended for their wealth. 659
