moved by very different manifestations of them, and embody them
from different aspects; they have not subjected themselves as
completely as we have to traditional lines of thought […] 865
La práctica de la pintura china es difícil y requiere de gran habilidad para manejar los
delicados o vigorosos trazos, cuya estructura está tan bien definida y clasificada. Su
metodología es estricta y conlleva largas horas de trabajo y ejercitación, y se concede que
buena parte de la habilidad para escribir está unida a la facilidad para pintar. Pero además
de admirar la expresiva imagen de ambas, se toma muy en cuenta el contenido, la
interpretación que se hace de ellas, porque las alusiones simbólicas y taoístas en las dos
artes son el bastión en el que se asienta su preeminencia:
Such a method could hardly have been possible without the long
training of the hand necessary for the writing of Chinese characters.
And not of hand only: for what is valued in handwriting is not different
from what is valued in painting: the virtual identity of the two arts is
often stressed. […] The Chinese union of writing and painting is best
seen in the ink paintings of that favourite motive, the bamboo. In such
painting the brush strokes would have an immediacy of
communication, whereby the inmost nature of the artist was revealed,
over and above his skill. […] When we read the descriptions of
handwriting by famous masters it is manifest that something much
more than mere skill was valued; just as the bamboo was chosen not
only because the form of its stem and leaves lent itself so well to
brush-drawing, but because it symbolized the kind of character most
admired by the Chinese, the character which yields and bends before
the storms of life but does not break: it is graceful but also strong. 866
