Hay que tener cierta cautela, y no establecer estrictas divisiones en la pintura de
paisaje entre el estilo chan, y la pintura taoísta, porque como se viene demostrando, la
constante interacción de ambos movimientos en el arte, hace complicada la obtención de
límites entre ellos:
The final brief chapter of Song painting was written in the
Buddhist monasteries around West Lake in the decades just prior to
the Mongol invasion of China in the 1270s –and, in fact, probably
continued for a time in those same monasteries after the Mongol
victory over the Song and the establishment of a «barbarian» dynasty.
Buddhism played a significant role in the history of Song painting,
from the beginnings of the landscape tradition to the origin of the
literati art and theory in the late Northern Song. Still, it has proven
difficult to isolate any distinctly Buddhist elements in painting aside
from subject matter, and it has been questioned even whether there
was anything that should be termed a purely Buddhist manner of
painting at all. The late Song flowering of Chan painting, however, is a
striking instance of a clearly Chan Buddhist –or, at any rate, Buddhist
(the distinctions between Chan and, say, Tiantai Buddhism need not
concern us)- artistic phenomenon. 390
El matiz expuesto por Barnhart al principio del párrafo anterior es de una gran
importancia: es muy difícil aislar elementos estrictamente budistas o hablar de una pintura
budista, por la mezcla indómita que hace el arte de la pintura china de todos los cuerpos
filosóficos y/o religiosos principales, durante la antigüedad. Es decir, budismo, taoísmo,
budismo chan, y confucianismo, están presentes en mayor o menor grado en las
