extenso para advertir el caldo de cultivo de la estética taoísta que tiene lugar en su trabajo,
Paintings are not produced by the mere exercise of manual
skill, but upon completion, must correspond to the phenomena of the
universe as explained in the Book of Changes (...) In painting, the
form of an object must first fuse with the spirit, after which the mind
transforms it in various ways. The spirit, to be sure, has no form; yet
that which moves and transforms the form of an object is the spirit. If
the spirit is not manifested in the painting, the forms will not move us
at all.
Human eyes are limited in their scope. Hence they are not able
to perceive all that is to be seen, yet with one small brush I can draw
the vast universe. (…) With strokes that run from the bottom to the
top, I will represent the T’ai-hua mountain. The solitary cliff is so
sublime and mysterious that it appears to emit dark cloud. (…) Gazing
upon the autumnal clouds, my soul takes flight as if on wings; bathed
in the spring breeze, my thoughts flow afar as if borne on a wide
current. (…) I unroll a picture and examine the inscription, and
meditate upon mountains and water which are foreign to me. Verdant
forests raise the wind; foaming waters stir the torrent of streams.
Wonderful indeed! Such a painting cannot be achieved by the skilful
use of fingers and hands alone, but only by the exercise of the spirit.
This is the true significance of painting. 189

están limitados en su alcance. Por lo tanto no están capacitados para percibir todo lo que hay para ser
visto, sin embargo con un pequeño pincel puedo dibujar el vasto universo. (...) Con pinceladas que
corren desde el fondo hacia arriba, representaré la montaña Taihua. El acantilado solitario es tan
sublime y misterioso que parece desprender una nube oscura. (...) Contemplando las nubes otoñales,
mi alma inicia el vuelo como si tuviera alas; bañado en la brisa primaveral, mis pensamientos fluyen
lejos como si fueran llevados por una ancha corriente (...) Desenrollo una pintura y examino la
inscripción, y medito sobre las montañas y aguas que me son extrañas. Verdes bosques se elevan al
viento; aguas espumosas agitan el torrente de los ríos. ¡En verdad es maravilloso! Tal pintura no
puede ser conseguida solamente por el uso hábil de dedos y manos, sino sólo mediante el ejercicio
del espíritu. Este es el verdadero significado de la pintura.”
