aside, but should read it slowly and carefully, taking notes, savoring a
little each day (like a delicious cake) and digesting each portion that you
study. This is indeed a book that should remain with you throughout
your life. It is a torch to carry through the dark night of your journey
through saṃsāra, the round of birth and death, it is a bright sun that
sheds boundless light and a friend that offers ever-helpful guidance.
One can truly say, without exaggeration, that the Saṃyutta Nikāya is
the key to unlock the most deeply buried treasures of the Buddha’s
original teachings. Even later Buddhist masters, like Nāgārjuna and
Asanga, often turned to the Saṃyutta for inspiration and illumination.
To establish the solid foundation for one’s own practice, the Saṃyutta
will always be found helpful.
When I was living in Sri Lanka as editor for the Buddhist Publication
Society, I spent ten years translating the Saṃyutta Nikāya into English
and compiling notes to it. At the end, the translation was published
by Wisdom Publications, which has helped so much to offer modern
English translations of the Nikāyas. I am now delighted to know
that this work has been translated from my English version into the
Indonesian language, which will make it more accessible to readers of
Buddhist literature in Indonesia. I extend my congratulations to the
translators at Dhammacitta for undertaking the Indonesian translation
of this work, which must surely have been for them a labor of love. I am
especially glad to know that this book of approximately two thousand
pages is intended for free distribution. I hope that this translation will
bring to life, for people in Indonesia today, the timeless message of the
Buddha, echoing down through twenty-five centuries, giving us clear
guidance on the proper conduct of life and showing us the clear way to
full liberation from suffering.
