verwendet. Komisch wirkt auch Presbury selbst, der nach der Einnahme des gefährlichen
Serums, das von einem Affen stammt, Verhalten und Gebaren eines Affen annimmt. Ob
Conan Doyle jedoch tatsächlich diesen Effekt beabsichtigt, ist anzuzweifeln. Vielmehr scheint
er durch die Verwandlung des Professors eine Atmosphäre des Unheimlichen schaffen zu
wollen, was zumindest beim heutigen Leser jedoch nicht gelingt:
The Professor was clearly visible crouching at the foot of the ivy-covered wall. As we watched him he suddenly
began with incredible agility to ascend it. From branch to branch he sprang, sure of foot and firm of grasp,
climbing apparently in mere joy at his own powers [...] With his dressing-gown flapping on each side of him he
looked like some huge bat glued against the side of his own house, a great square dark patch upon the moonlit
wall. Presently he tired of his amusement, and dropping from branch to branch, he squatted down into the old
attitude and moved towards the stables, creeping along in the same strange way as before. 262
Eine ganz besondere Figur stellt Mycroft Holmes dar, der in den drei Erzählungen „Greek
Interpreter“ (2/9), „Final Case” (2/11) und „Bruce-Partington Plans“ (4/4) auftritt. Mycroft ist
sieben Jahre älter als sein Bruder, ähnelt diesem äußerlich kaum und trägt komische Züge:
Mycroft Holmes was a much larger and stouter man than Sherlock. His body was absolutely corpulent, but his
face, though massive, had preserved something of the sharpness of expression which was so remarkable in that of
his brother. His eyes, which were of a peculiarly light watery grey, seemed to always retain that far-away,
introspective look which I had only observed in Sherlock’s when he was exerting his full powers.’I am glad to
meet you, sir,’ said he, putting out a broad, flat hand like the flipper of a seal. 263
Mycroft besitzt mindestens ebenso große intellektuelle wie detektivische Fähigkeiten. Da er
jedoch zu träge ist, diese im täglichen Leben einzusetzen, sind sie in der Öffentlichkeit nicht
bekannt: „I said that he was my superior in observation and deduction. If the art of the
detective began and ended in reasoning from an armchair, my brother would be the greatest
criminal agent that ever lived. But he has no ambition and no energy.“ 264 Mycroft Holmes
scheint in „Greek Interpreter“ keiner beruflichen Tätigkeit nachzugehen und verbringt seine
Tage im Diogenes Club, wo sich die Einzelgänger und Misanthropen Londons treffen: „[...]
[T]he Diogenes Club now contains the most unsociable und unclubable men in town. No
member is permitted to take the least notice of any other one.“ 265
Der anfängliche Eindruck, dass Mycroft Holmes bloß ein sympathischer Müßiggänger ist,
wird revidiert, als er in der Erzählung „Bruce-Partington Plans“ (4/4) als Berater der
britischen Regierung auftritt, ohne den die Nation nicht auskommen könnte. Mycroft Holmes
ist der wichtigste Koordinator des Geheimdienstes:
