Demaskierung, der das rasante Eindringen der Detektive mit ihrem Klienten Grant Munro in
ein mysteriöses Haus vorausgeht:
‘Leave go of me! I must pass you. My friends and I are going to settle this matter once and forever.’ He pushed
her to one side and we followed closely after him. As he threw the door open an elderly woman ran out in front of
him and tried to bar his passage, but he thrust her back, and an instant afterwards we were all upon the stairs.
Grant Munro rushed into the lighted room at the top, and we entered it at his heels [..] In the corner, stooping
over a desk, there sat what appeared to be a little girl. Her face was turned away as we entered, but we could see
that she was dressed in a red frock, and that she had long white gloves on. As she whisked round to us I gave a
cry of surprise and horror. The face which she turned towards us was of the strangest livid tint, and the features
were absolutely devoid of any expression. An instant later the mystery was explained. Holmes, with a laugh,
passed his hand behind the child’s ear, a mask peeled off from her countenance, and there was a little coal-black

negress with all her white teeth flashing in amusement at our amazed faces.
Überraschungseffekte werden aber auch dadurch herbeigeführt, dass Holmes oftmals
unvermutet einen verschwundenen Gegenstand oder eine verschwundene Person präsentiert.
So bringt Holmes in „Noble Bachelor“ (1/10) die Braut zurück, in „Beryl Coronet“ (1/11) das
gestohlene Diadem, und in „Silver Blaze“ (2/1) das entführte Pferd. In „Musgrave Ritual“
(2/5) offenbart er seinem Freund Milverton, dass es sich bei den unscheinbaren
Metallplättchen um wertvolle Münzen handelt; in „Naval Treaty“ (2/10) werden dem
verzweifelten Klienten die gestohlenen Dokumente auf einer Frühstücksplatte serviert; in
„Mazarin Stone“ (5/3) findet der arrogante Auftraggeber, der an Holmes’ Künsten zweifelt,
das gestohlene Kronjuwel in seiner Tasche, in die der Detektiv den Edelstein geschmuggelt
hat. Ähnlich präsentiert Holmes die berühmte Perle der Borgias in „The Six Napoleons“ (3/8).
Außergewöhnliche Unterhaltungseffekte sind ein Treffen mit Holmes’ Bruder Mycroft im
Diogenes Club („Greek Interpreter“, 2/9) und Holmes’ überraschende Rückkehr nach seinem
vermeintlichen Tod („Empty House“, 3/1). Auch der komische Auftritt des Pfarrers in
„Devil’s Foot“ (4/7), der sicher ist, dass der Teufel sein Unwesen in seiner Gemeinde treibt,
sowie die Kuriositätensammlung von Nathan Garrideb („Three Garridebs“, 5/3) stellen
ungewöhnlich komische Szenen dar.
Einzigartig ist die Szene, in denen Holmes Watson in einem Ablenkungsmanöver beschuldigt,
einen Tisch umgestoßen zu haben, obwohl er selbst es getan hat („Reigate Squires“, 2/6).
Auch Holmes’ Suche nach Indizien mit dem Spürhund Pompey trägt zur Unterhaltung bei:
„Let me introduce you to Pompey,“ said he. „Pompey is the pride of the local draghounds, no very great flier, but
a staunch hound on a scent. Well, Pompey, you may not be fast, but I expect, you will be too fast for a couple of
middle-aged London gentlemen, so I will take the liberty of fastening this leather leash to your collar. Now boy,
come along, and show what you can do.“ 578
