ABSTRACT: The present study aims to reflect on the interface literature and
philosophy, taking as a starting point the unfinished novel The Man Without Qualities
by Robert Musil. We intend to make some considerations about the novel in the relation
between an essayistic narrative and the literary-philosophical project of Musil as we
interpret them. Based on that, we compose our text in three moments: (1) punctuate
some negative topics of the work named "contradictory qualities", according to Maurice
Blanchot in the text "Musil" (chapter of The Book to Come); (2) characterize the
narrator's position, more specifically, in the modern novel, attributing to this moment
properties of the essay, according to Theodor Adorno in "The Essay as Form" and "The
Position of the Narrator in the Contemporary Novel." (chapters of Notes to Literature,
Volume 1); (3) Lastly, to emphasize the essayist model in musilian writing and to
understand how it fits philosophical writing based on Castro's texts (2011): “Aspectos
da relação entre ensaio e experiência em Montaigne e Musil” and “Sobre o ensaísmo de
Robert Musil”. Therefore, the study presents the provisional synthesis around the
characteristics of the modern narrative based on both the conceptualization of the
philosophical essay present in the novel The Man Without Qualities as in the possibility
that the literary work can awaken the philosophical thought in the reader.
Keywords: Robert Musil. Literature. Philosophy. Essay.
pensamento antigo.
