as mothers, workers, wives and housewives, the article intends, in addition to the<br />

general objective, to confirm the presence of babassu coconut breakers in the<br />

municipality of Imperatriz. The identity of the babassu coconut breaker holds a<br />

knowledge of great importance for the preservation of this imm<strong>ate</strong>rial activity: the job<br />

of breaking the coconut. Even at the thresholds between urban and rural and the<br />

frequent process of deforestation that has been occurring throughout the region of<br />

Tocantins; the activity still has a wide range of life histories that can collabor<strong>ate</strong> with<br />

the studies of preservation of this intangible heritage for the Brazilian society and<br />

especially for the local society. Therefore, the article discusses the presence of babaçu<br />

coconut breakers in the municipality of Imperatriz, and the competence to preserve the<br />

results obtained from the field research in this academic work is visible, making its<br />

identity as a babassu coconut breaker linked to the palm tree present in the city that<br />

transcends the m<strong>ate</strong>rial and economic relationship of the same.<br />

INTRODUÇÃO:<br />

O interesse do autor em dissertar o presente trabalho partiu de dois vieses:<br />

primeiro, por perceber ausência de forma tímida de trabalhos acadêmicos que explorem<br />

a vida dessas personagens na cidade de Imperatriz-MA e segundo, por ser neto de<br />

quebradeira de coco babaçu. Ambos os caminhos, foram propulsores e para a efetivação<br />

e motivação deste trabalho. O mesmo, visa compreender o oficio de aprendizagem da<br />

quebra do coco. Tendo como pergunta: “como elas aprenderam a quebrar o coco<br />

babaçu?”. Partindo desse caso, analisaremos as respostas para respondermos à pergunta.<br />

Mas antes, iremos analisar acervos organizados e sistematizados de forma mais geral,<br />

que vem abordando a vida e o cotidiano dessas mulheres e em segundo momento<br />
