ABSTRACT: Men at work: from naval carpentry to natural dyes. This work deals with
the registration of the processes of the production of artisanal carpentry and the use of
natural dyes present in São João de Côrtes, Alcântara, Maranhão. There is a descriptive
the impact of health activities and promoted greater work performance. It also discusses
aspects related to the continuity of the work in the naval carpentry, since the young
people do not show interest in this activity. As a consequence, it can be observed that
large boats using colored sails with natural dyes are no longer manufactured, since most
craftsmen are old and limited to building canoes. Thus, this work aims to present the
performance of the designer in interpreting the productive actions and to dialogue with
the interactions between the craftsmen and their products, contributing with mapping of
the practices that involve the activities and, together with the artisans, exposes
