ABSTRACT: The present article intends to approach the ideologies that can be found
in the uses of the words written by poets of the Roman imperial period of centuries II
A.D. and I in their satire. It will be through the Latin literatures, works of the poet called
Martial in Epigrams and Petronius in Satiricon that we can perceive the social context in
which the women of the Roman elite were surrounded. The uses of words, coming from
a male audience - the aristocratic poets -, following a perspective of M. Bakhtin, cover
ideological practices to spread certain social dictates to the Roman woman of the elite.
Acceptable dictates, such as, for example, fidelity to the spouse, and therefore, the
woman is said to be honored. However, if Roman married women of the elite, also
called matrons, did not follow the rules postulated by this aristocratic and masculine
woman considered as dishonored. This will be an attempt to maintain, through words, a
control over the actions of this female group. However, we may think that these
practices of seeking relationships outside the home and non-obedience to the husband
are ways of confronting such discursive and ideological mechanisms of this male
aristocracy.
Keywords: Latin literature. Satire. Ideological mechanisms. Matrons.
escolhidas e traçadas para se referirem a um determinado contexto social, que
expressam e estão carregadas de ideologias e juízos de valor.
O que queremos pontuar é que a palavra em determinado contexto social
escrever uma sátira ou um epigrama, tem uma intenção, podendo vir a ser política e até
