ABSTRACT: Hansen’s disease is a serious public health problem, having historically
hit populations living in poor living conditions. In contemporary Brazilhansen’s disease
that affects the poorest stratum of the population. The State of Maranhão has one of the
highest levels of prevalence of the disease in BrazilThus, prevention is recognized as a
noble aspect in the control of hansen’s disease and one of the ways used is the visual
communication. With this investigation we aimed to identify speechs about the hansen’s
disease disclosed in flyers, folders, and a variety of materials produced by the Health
Ministry. The theoretical-methodological strategies of the documentary research were
used in the investigation. The documents analyzed demonstrated that in the
dissemination of information on the prevention
of hansen’s disease what prevails is the biomedical discourse on diagnosis, treatment,
cure and prevention. The sociocultural aspects of the disease with regard to prejudice
are either absent or are timidly addressed in the documents. In addition, sociocultural
information, such as alert to aspects of prejudice, are not perceived. The speech is
clearly clinical-biomedical and there is a concern in disseminate between health
professionals and patients only that this disease has a cure. Thus, the importance of
visual communication and its peculiarity present in the use of visual elements, such as
images, graphics, videos or drawings to express one or more ideas, thus achieving great
reach of the information.
