and fundamentalists. Together with campiña and nombre árabe, overall the translator’s text
(which is also the editor’s) forces a revision of our conceptions of the Other while
introducing Otherness in the field of the Same. We identify with its whole range of voices −but
there remains a sense of displacement, of the untranslatable (campiña, su padre era sacerdote…)
that suspends or postpones indefinitely coherence and makes it partial, uncannily
inconclusive.
