PABLO CANCELO–EVALUATION OF MACHINE TRANSLATION SYSTEMS
The assessment was made in two stages. During the first part of the test, the
packages worked automatically so the output was produced without human intervention.
During the second stage, we were not able to use more than two of the translators, ESI and
Power Translator Pro 7.0, as Altavista lacks an interactive facility. The same four technical
excerpts from EB were used for the test.
4. DESCRIPTION OF ONE THE PACKAGES TO BE EVALUATED
English Spanish Interpreter Deluxe is a computer suite designed to help with the
process of translating from English into Spanish with or without direct human
intervention. The program consists of a parser, a grammar interpreter, a four-module
electronic dictionary and a word processor.
Any English document in RTF or MS Word format can be opened in the upper
window of the word processor, and with a click of a button, it will be translated into the
lower window. When interacting with the program, the parser analyzes and interprets
English sentences one by one and then generates new phrases in the target language
window that can be modified with the help of the dictionary. . When the user is satisfied
with the result it is possible to select a word, a paragraph or the entire document and have
it read out with the included text-to-speech voice
The copy of the English-Spanish Interpreter Deluxe (ESI) on CD-ROM, together
with the code diskette, was provided by Word Magic Software and tested on a 32-Mb-
RAM Pentium running at 166 Mhz. Installation was easy and the program ran smoothly
once the codes were inserted. The Deluxe version of the program has only four trial runs.
You may download it, order a CD, buy a first license via e-mail or upgrade from earlier
versions. Different packages – Standard, Professional and Deluxe and add-on dictionaries –
may also be downloaded from Wordmagic’s site.
Compared to the standard version, the English-Spanish Interpreter Deluxe is fully
32-bits compatible and comes with dictionaries that offer a much larger number of
translations (600,000), more synonyms (4 million), more phrasal verbs, more translations
per word, a wider number of connotations, an add-on Specialty Dictionary (some of these
fields are technical, such as Computer, Internet, Medical, Accounting, Business, Finance,
Banking, Investments, Insurance, IMF Terminology, Management and Law), a text-tospeech
algorithm, and voice-command recognition. The program interface is friendly and
versatile. The interface language may be customized through pull-down menus for Spanish
or English. There are edit facilities such as copy, cut and paste; the tools menu gives access
to a spell checker, the four-module dictionary, a customizable text-to-speech reader and an
options dialogue box which allows customization of program preferences, such as file
locations, toolbars, or default direction of translation. There is also a help menu with a
descriptive manual and information on how to use the software and other facilities to
change fonts, find and replace words and a document explorer. All these facilities are also
available by clicking on the icons displayed on the toolbar, which are also linked to tooltip
menus.
Once ESI is running, two windows are displayed. The upper window is reserved for
English text and the lower box displays the Spanish translation. One can either type in the
text you want to translate, copy-and-paste it from any text-editing window or open any
