Despite their conventional roots these engineering fields and industries have been
incorporating high-tech innovations to a varying degree in an effort to adapt to modernday
technological standards and to remain internationally competitive. Thus, electronic
control, the integration of sensors and actuators, software-guided functions, automation
and miniaturization are typical high-tech features which have found their way into many
conventional technologies, industrial systems and technical products. Simple examples
include systems like elevator doors with light barriers as safety mechanisms, automobiles
with fuel-injection control systems and sensor-activated airbags, solar-powered
calculators and weight scales, program-guided sewing machines, and so forth.
A number of industries and engineering fields with conventional origins have
developed more strongly in the high-tech direction and occupy an “intermediate” position
between the “low-tech” (conventional) and “high-tech” (innovative) sectors. Such
technologies I would term as “intermediate” or “transitional” technologies.
