states, “the need for translation into foreign languages far exceeds the available number of<br />

translators who are foreign language native speakers” (1992: 292).<br />

In any case, service translation may also reach near-native levels and therefore not<br />

violate the criteria of reliability and respectability (McAlester 1992: 294). The problem is<br />

that most institutions commissioning the translation still hold the i<strong>de</strong>alistic and, why not<br />

say it here, extremely comfortable view that any speaker of a foreign language automatically<br />

makes a good translator. So I now suggest some conclusions: the lower the translator’s<br />

status, the poorer the quality of the translation, and there is no d<strong>en</strong>ying that.<br />

We must be realistic and always bear in mind that the text we have be<strong>en</strong> <strong>de</strong>aling<br />

with has be<strong>en</strong> published (and its translation has be<strong>en</strong> commissioned) by a regional tourist<br />

authority, which means a rather limited budget. Ev<strong>en</strong> if I agree with those who believe that<br />

the truly effective tourist brochure is that which has be<strong>en</strong> <strong>de</strong>signed with a specific target<br />

culture in mind (as is the case with texts from some national tourist authorities), economic<br />

limitations make this impossible (Jänis & Timo 1994) and we must make do with the<br />

means we have. However, this certainly does not mean that we should have to put up with<br />

texts like this.<br />

The consequ<strong>en</strong>ces can be more or less serious <strong>de</strong>p<strong>en</strong>ding on the situation. In our<br />

particular case, how the text can attract the pot<strong>en</strong>tial visitor to the area it is supposed to<br />

promote on the grounds of a rich cultural heritage by using a language that is nothing but<br />

the sign of quite the opposite situation… is simply quite beyond my un<strong>de</strong>rstanding.<br />
