These blue-and-white tiles cover the walls of many traditional Portuguese buildings.
As Portuguese is the TL in the present study, our TL reader will have the advantage of
being able to create a more accurate image based on the description given, in comparison
with that created by the SL reader. However, he will not experience the exoticism intended.

The second example shows French cultural references.
They were – Arun assumed – in the French Channel Tunnel station, a neat little
structure, identical to the English one, except that the signs said DAMES and
MESSIEURS, and that from somewhere came a heart-rendering smell of fresh coffee.

As Arun arrives in France he sees signs in French and smells the typical aroma of
fresh coffee. Again, the Portuguese TL reader will have experienced the heart-rending smell of
fresh coffee, as this is also traditional in Portugal. The exoticism maintained in the nontranslation
of the French words is not paralleled here. However, the more aware reader
may compensate for this loss by realising how exotic such an experience is to the
characters.
Estavam – deduziu Arun – na estação francesa do Túnel do Canal da Mancha,
uma estrutura pequena e organizada, idêntica à inglesa, excepto que os avisos diziam
DAMES e MESSIEURS, e que de algum lado chegava um maravilhoso aroma a café
fresco.
The last example selected also includes a reference to the French culture, but of a
different kind.
Close at hand was a house – a large house, a mansion really, Arun supposed. It
was built of brownish stone and had several turrets, each of them crowned with a little
slate-capped cone.
