MICHAEL GRADE–IMPACT OF THE GROWTH OF SCI AND TECH KNOWLEDGE IN TRANSLATION
6. LIST OF REFERENCES
2. Specialized subjects and specialized translation should be taught
primarily by bilingual specialists from the field and not by
(academic or non-academic) language professionals with only a
limited subject-specific background and a rudimentary knowledge
of the field they are teaching.
3. More experts from the translating profession rather than teaching
staff with a degree in linguistics, literature or language studies
should teach practical translation.
4. The relative importance of specialized subjects (economics, law,
engineering, medicine) should be expanded toward engineering,
science and technology – and reinforced by specialized technical
translation in the high-tech domain.
A latent attitude among parts of German teaching staff aiming to
reduce technical translation in favor of (non-technical) language
education and a foreign-language qualification profile free of
specialized translating skills should be opposed, or such a
curricular option should be offered as a separate branch of study.
5. Courses on the actual profession of translating (“Berufskunde”)
should be introduced into the curricula.
6. Internships and practice-oriented semesters should become a
compulsory part of translation curricula.
