RAINER MARIA KOEPPL–ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND JOHN WAYNE
the audience, can see and hear what is happening in the trial; and his colleagues waiting
outside can prepare for the moment when the woman, the most important figure in this
scene, leaves the courtroom. She is Alicia Huberman, the daughter of the accused, played
by Ingrid Bergman.
This scene combines Hechts screenwriting at its best with many elements typical
of Hitchcock, such as a very dynamic camera and a highly sexually voyeuristic aspect.
Listening in on a trial from which the public has been barred, we can only hear the
dialogue from the perspective of an observer or an acoustic voyeur.
Judge: “(Is there) any legal reason why sentence should not be pronounced?”
Defense Counsel: “No, Your Honor.“
John Huberman: “Yes. I have something to say. You can put me away, but you can’t put away what is
going to happen to you and to this whole country next time. Next time we are going to […]”
Judge: “It is the judgement of this court that the defendant, John Huberman, having been found guilty of
the crime of treason against the United States by the jury of this court for the southern district of Florida
at Miami, be committed to the custody of the United States Attorney General for imprisonment in an
institution of the penitentiary type for a period of twenty years.”
Alicia Huberman, the daughter of John Huberman, is not interested in politics.
She is a notorious party girl. This explains the origin of the film title Notorious. (To be
notorious means to have a bad reputation. The Spanish title of Notorious is Encadenados
meaning “enchained” in English). When she leaves the courtroom, the reporters pounce
upon her. You can really tell how much Hitchcock liked this scene.
Reporter I: “Here she comes!”
Reporter II: “We’d like a statement from you, Miss Huberman, about yout father.”
Reporter III: “For instance, do you think your father got what he deserved?”
Reporter IV: “Could we say you’re pleased your father is going to pay the penalty for being a German
worker?”
John Huberman is a member of a Nazi organization which has its central
headquarters in Rio, Brazil. The conspirators are disguised as German businessmen, and
they are planning a political coup against the United States. The American FBI is trying to
uncover their conspiracy. The secret service comes up with the idea of engaging Alicia
Huberman as an undercover agent. She is supposed to betray her father and his political
ideals, to infiltrate the group of conspirators and find out what the group of Nazis is
planning to do.
But there are still more aspects of treason to come in this film. The secret service
agent Devlin, played by Cary Grant, has been chosen to recruit Alicia Huberman for the
FBI. He appears uninvited at one of her parties and tries to get closer to her. They drink
and flirt together, but he doesn’t betray the truth behind his intentions. He pretends he is
interested in Alicia as a woman and tricks her into trusting him.
The next morning, Alicia wakes up with a terrible hangover from drinking. Devlin
thinks this is the right time to tell her the truth about his real identity. This scene is
