La traducción, además (o en lugar) de una actividad lingüística y de una mediación cultural, pasa a verse como un fenómeno que refleja, socava o refuerza las tensiones de poder que mantienen las culturas involucradas, o un escenario más donde ciertas instituciones, grupos sociales y puntos de vista libran una serie de batallas en el fondo políticas. En este sentido, un buen número de las ponencias presentadas abordan el estudio de la traducción como un conflicto de autoridad o un duelo de ideologías. A partir de ahí, otras se preguntan en qué medida esta concepción de la traducción conduce a una redefinición del papel del traductor, o lo requiere, y hasta qué punto suscita consideraciones éticas. Son éstos, efectivamente, conceptos y cuestiones muy novedosos, que, paradójicamente, en algunos casos permiten volver a abordar los temas que tienen una mayor tradición dentro de los Estudios de Traducción con ojos críticos. Así, por ejemplo, los autores de algunas de las ponencias aquí presentadas emplean las nociones de ideología, poder y autoridad para ampliar las perspectivas de los trabajos tradicionales enmarcados en el ámbito de la Historia de la Traducción. Si la incorporación de este tipo de cuestiones enriquece notablemente la mirada al pasado, sin duda es fundamental a la hora de asegurar la proyección de la disciplina hacia el futuro. Gran parte de las colaboraciones de este volumen dan cuenta del evidente influjo de las nuevas tecnologías y del nuevo paradigma de la sociedad de la información en el fenómeno de la traducción. Otras muchas se ocupan de averiguar su significación cultural en un mundo que sufre los efectos opuestos por una parte de los fenómenos de la globalización y el multiculturalismo, y por otra del resurgir de lo local y de la defensa de los particularismos. Un buen número de ellas, además, se pregunta hasta qué punto estos cambios generales no afectarán a la definición misma de la traducción, por ejemplo en la medida en que la sociedad digital trae aparejados unos conceptos de Texto o Autoría diferentes de los que han constituido los pilares sobre los que se ha asentado tradicionalmente la noción de traducción, o desde el momento en que es difícil definir esta actividad como un proceso entre dos culturas o dos lenguas en una época en la que, en último extremo, las lenguas y las culturas son ya de por sí híbridas y plurales. A la luz de interrogantes como éstos, no es de extrañar, pues, que en el Congreso se hiciera palpable una preocupación por cuestiones de carácter teórico y metodológico; es decir, que gran parte de los ponentes expusieran la necesidad de revisar los fundamentos de la propia disciplina, cuando no acometieran directamente esta labor en sus trabajos. En este sentido, si por un lado este volumen refleja la voluntad de los Estudios de Traducción de ampliar sus miras con la exploración de otros ámbitos del saber, deja entrever asimismo un deseo de cuestionar sus propias premisas, de someterse a un examen crítico y a la introspección. Ambas facetas son esenciales y complementarias, aunque también son, en un aspecto fundamental, coincidentes, análogas: ambas traslucen una voluntad de cuestionamiento y progreso.
