References to money were approached differently. In songs, their translation was
often sacrificed in order to facilitate rhyming, and rhythm. In such cases, the slight
compromise to meaning was seen as acceptable.
“I’ve several different kinds
Of pickled tamarinds!
Try my pickled bananas, walk up, take your pick!
Try my liquorice roots, worth a dollar a lick!”

“Try my
lemony
wintergreen
sassafras
peppermint
superfine candy, a penny a stick!” (ibid., 1993[1966]: 132).
To the TL reader, this song will sound very exotic owing to the variety of sweets on
sale, which are not available in the TL culture. This compensates for the loss in cultural
references regarding currency. One reference was changed into the TL currency, tostão
instead of penny. However, to the TL reader, um tostão represents an insignificant amount,
and it no longer is in circulation. This means that some exoticism remains, but with a
different implication. As this change is made to provide a rhyme with the last verse of the
previous group, the reference to the American currency is also lost. It is replaced by the
quantitative expression nem muito.

However, there is no TL term offered for farthing. Therefore, in the TL, this term must be
