The paraphrasing in the first of the two translations above is of a descriptive nature,
and it merely identifies the type of book referred to, for which the title must remain in the
SL. In the second example the paraphrasing is offered as two separate phrases. The first,
condenada ao degredo which translates as condemned to exile, is informative and adds
dramatisation. The second gives the TL reader the broad location of Botany Bay.
The next example refers to the mention of the characters’ native language, English.
and,
“We were then picked up by a small and most insanitary fishing-boat, manned by a
set of fellows as picturesque as they were unwashed, who none of them spoke a word of
English.” (Aiken 1992 [1962]: 188-9)
“Depois fomos recolhidos por um barco de pesca pequeno e extremamente
insalubre, manobrado por um grupo de homens tão pitorescos como sujos e nenhum deles
falava uma palavra da nossa língua.”
This reference is replaced with a vague reference nossa língua which translates as our
language. Although it could be argued that it may be important for the TL reader to be
reminded that the story takes place in a different culture and that the characters are
English, the mention of the SL might be confusing. Such vague reference as that offered in
the TL text may arguably mislead some readers into thinking of it as the TL, but it will
avoid a conflict between the language the character is seen to use and the language that
reference purports her to speak. A comparable example follows,
“Don’t she get no faggot?” said Dido.
The Slut gaped at Dido, as if she had said something in Portuguese
For which we offer the following translation:
“Ela não leva uma almôndega?” disse Dido.

A Sostra olhou para Dido de boca aberta, como se ela tivesse dito algo em Chinês.
Portuguese here is used to refer to something incomprehensible to the character, the
Slut, and to the SL reader. But in the TL text, it would not mean this. Therefore, it must be
replaced with a reference which does offer the same connotation to the TL reader. Chinese
is normally used in this context.
