‘Je me haste à repliquer sur la response qu'il vous a pleu me faire dans la lettre de
M. de Stein Callenfelts pour vous supplier de ne charger pas ma sottise de Treves
d'une interpretation si sinistre, que de vous appliquer ce mon tres-cher coeur, comme
un tiltre entre vous et moy. J'advouë, Madame, que cela m'a faict rougir, et que je
n'ay peu differer de m'en defendre serieusement. La verité est qu'ayant veu à
Vianden que ce compliment est ordinaire entre M. Stein Callenfelts et vous, comme
cela est tres-juste et raisonnable, je l'ay 2) voulu aussi employer entre vous deux,
bien loing de ceste impudence d'y prendre aucune part de mon costé; et en effect,
Madame, si ceste sotte lettre est encor au monde, vous n'y trouverez point de
discours ni de rapport que de mari à femme, ma main n'ayant servi que d'interprete

Since I receaved yours it si soe long that you may have forgott to have written as
well as I to have receaved, had not I kept yours by me, the civility of which as well
as the esteeme I have of your person obleegeth me to make you this returne, and
had done it sooner, had my intention not bin interrupted both by indisposition and
absence. The contents of myne was, I remember, to give you some knowledge of
the miserable condition of Chateau Renard, and your answer was that, intending
sale of it, noething was necessary or could be done for putting of it in a better posture,
to which there is noe reply to be made by me, but I am very much concerned to tell
you that, what with both the saisies made by Mons. de Bricmau and François
Mouche, as well as by the noise Tassin makes, sometimes that he hath sold it to
Mons. Bushuratt, sometimes to Mons. Tillier 6) , and at others to Mad. Chatillon 7) ,
distracts all the tenants soe much that they will pay noething, and keepes both me
