Abstract
Scientific journals are one of the most important ways of spreading knowledge. Taking this into
account, the aim of this study is to analyse and assess recent trends in research on public relations,
based on the contents of the main Spanish journals of communication. With this objective we
conducted a content analysis of the numbers of the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 from 10 Spanish
scientific publications with the greatest impact in the field of communication, analyzing the articles
dealing wholly or partly on public relations.
Results indicate that 5.24% of the articles published in the 10 journals analyzed deal about public
relations or related items. Three of the journals have not published any article about public relations
or related items during the analyzed period. Gender parity of the authors and a large plurality in the
universities of origin has been observed in selected texts. Furthermore, trends to outstanding issues
could not be observed, although articles about politic and institutional communication are present to
a large extent. A 26.83% of the selected articles do not include the concept of public relations
anywhere (text, title, abstract, key words or bibliography).
We conclude that the diversity of subjects that the journals of communication have to accommodate
motivates the invisibility of research on public relations, which lose relevance among other recurring
themes.
