Archiwum krajowe jest instytucją usługową dla administracji, badań i społeczeństwa.
Do jego zadań należy doradztwo i opieka metodyczna oraz źródłoznawcza
nad osobami, gminami, stowarzyszeniami i innymi instytucjami przy
pracach badawczych, wydawniczych i wystawienniczych. Archiwa wspierają
poszukiwania heraldyczne oraz prace dyplomowe i dysertacje.
Ważne zadanie archiwów krajowych polega na naukowym opracowaniu
przechowywanego zasobu i upowszechnianiu historii danego kraju. Służą do
tego celu wydawane przez archiwa czasopisma 43 i publikacje oraz spotkania dyskusyjne.
Podziałowi archiwów austriackich po drugiej wojnie światowej na federalne
i krajowe towarzyszyła centralizacja tak na szczeblu federacji, jak i danego kraju
związkowego. Austriackie Archiwum Państwowe powstałe w 1945 r. gromadzi
zasoby historyczne i bieżące federalnych władz państwowych, podobnie jak archiwa
krajowe — archiwalia historyczne i bieżące władz krajowych. Nie można
jednak zapominać, że oprócz archiwów centralnych tak na szczeblu federalnym,
jak i krajowym istnieją liczne archiwa miejskie i komunalne, rodzinne i prywatne,
kościelne i muzealne, partii politycznych i stowarzyszeń, naukowe i gospodarcze,
które zajmują ważne miejsce w krajobrazie archiwalnym Austrii.

(nationwide) and regional level (federated states). The organisation and scope of operations of the
archives in Austria are related to the Austrian Republic’s federal system. At the central level there are
federal archives and at the national level — national ones. Among federal archives the Austrian State
Archive, which is the central one, plays an eminent role.
Founded in 1945 pursuant to the Archive Law dated 17 August 1999, the Austrian State Archive
is a state office and reports to the Federal Chancellor. Four archives (departments) are subordinate to
the General Director — the General Administrative Archives, and the Finance and Court Chamber
Archives; the Republic’s Archive, the House, Court, and State Archives; and the War Archives.
Pursuant to the Archive Law dated 1999, the Austrian State Archive is, as the central archive, not
the only archive at the federal level. Some federal offices and institutions are authorized to operate
their own archives, including the Parliament’s head office, the highest courts, universities, the national
library, and museums.
After the Word War Two and re-establishment of the federal system in Austria, regional archives
were established in autonomic federal states to form an integral part of a given state’s administration.
