Leszek Pudłowski, The Records Life Cycle Model. The article presents the first theoretical model
that proposes a comprehensive description of records management processes. The concept of the
life cycle of records roots in the distant past, but in the archival domain it only originated in the United
States at the end of the first half of the 20th century. The model is successfully used today by archives
and records management professionals, especially on the American continent and partly in Europe.
The author demonstrates that there is no single creator of the concept. Moreover, he rules out one
of the contenders considered for that title. The article stresses the merits of Philip C. Brooks and
Emmett J. Leahy and finds a forgotten precursor of the concept, Helen L. Chatfield. Having analysed
more than 40 different proposals for the model, the author separates its two — previously unnoticed
— basic types of the life cycle concept: frequential and functional. The two models identify 3 to
10 life cycle phases. In conclusion, the author proposes the use of a comprehensive and streamlined
records life cycle model with the following five phases: creation, maintenance, use, retention, and
disposition.
Leszek Pudłowski, Modèle de cycle de vie des documents, Le modèle de cycle de vie des documents
est le premier modèle théorique dans lequel on a proposé une description complète de la gestion
de documentation. Les origines de cette conception du cycle de vie remontent à un passé lointain,
mais en ce qui concerne le domaine des archives, elle est née aux États-Unis vers la fin de la première
moitié du XX e siècle. Elle est utilisée avec succès jusqu’à nos jours, surtout sur le continent américain
et partiellement européen. L’auteur a prouvé qu’elle n’a pas un seul auteur, mais il a exclu l’un
des candidats aspirant à ce titre. Il a souligné les mérites de Philipe C. Brooks et Emmett J. Leahy et
a rappelé la précurseuse de cette idée, Helen L. Chatfield. Après avoir analysé plus de 40 propositions
de modèle, il a isolé ses deux types fondamentaux (non aperçus avant) : utilitaire et fonctionnel. Ces
modèles ont de 3 à 10 phases. A la fin l’auteur a proposé au lecteur polonais l’utilisation du modèle
optimal de cycle de vie des documents composé de cinq phases : création, maintenance, utilisation,
conservation et tri.

документации является первой теоретической моделью, в которой предложено комплексное
описание управления документацией. Концепция жизненного цикла своими корнями восходит
к далекому прошлому, но в отношении архивной отрасли возникла в США только в конце первой
половины ХХ в. Концепция успешно применяется до сих пор, особенно на американском
и частично европейском континентах. Автор не только продемонстрировал, что модель создавалась
не единолично, но даже исключил одного из претендентов на звание основоположника.
Подчеркнул заслуги Филиппа К. Брукса и Эммета Лихи, также напомнил o забытoй предшественнице
этой идеи — Хелен Л. Чaтфилд. Проанализировав более 40 предложенных моделей,
выделил среди них два основных, незамеченных ранее, типа: потребительский и функциональный.
Эти модели насчитывают около 3–10 фаз. В завершение автор предложил читателю применение
модели оптимального жизненного цикла документации со следующими пятью фазами:
создание, обслуживание, использование, хранение и размещение.
