The Relationship between Social Media Use and Loneliness among
Students in University Malaysia Terengganu

The aim of this study is to identify the significance of the usage of social media and
loneliness among students in University Malaysia Terengganu. This quantitative study
involved 351 respondents comprising male and female students from various races
living in UMT residential colleges. The respondent will be selected using
disproportionate stratified random sampling method where samples were categorized
according to gender. The instruments to be used are Bergen Social Networking
Addiction Scale (BSNAS) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. The collected data will be
process and analyst using Statistical Packages for the Social Science (SPSS) version
25.0. The relationship between social media usage and loneliness will be explained
using Pearson correlation while t-test will be used to see the differences in the level
of social media use and loneliness between the sexes.
