Morphological Characteristics and Genetic Variability of Stingless
bees (Geniotrigona thoracica) in Terengganu

In determination of the species, the morphology part plays a vital role along
with molecular studies. Besides, genetic variability is very crucial, as it
determines the ability of the species, to adapt to the changes of the
environment. The aims of this study were to determine the morphological
characteristics of domesticated G. thoracica among two different sites, Sekayu
Recreation Park and Tembila, Besut in Terengganu and to determine the
genetic variability of the domesticated G. thoracica using RAPD as the molecular
marker. By using Dino-lite, with stereo-microscope, the morphormetric
measurements of the stingless bee were taken and recorded. Then, the data
analysis was conducted using multivariate analysis. From the data analysis, it
was seen that there were significant differences between the two sites. The
DNA of G. thoracica were extracted using DNeasy tissue kit (Qiagen TM ) and the
PCR was run using RAPD primer, which were OPA 6, OPA 11 and OPA 17.
