A STUDY ON THE COMPOSITION AND FEEDING PREFERENCE OF
POLYCHAETES IN THE CORAL REEF AREA OF PANTAI PASIR CINA,
PULAU BIDONG

In Malaysia, the study on polychaetes are still scarce; where there are no studies done
on their feeding preferences and compositions in the coral reef area. Thus, this study
was conducted to determine the feeding preference using agar-lure traps and to
identify the composition of polychaetes in the coral reef area of Pantai Pasir Cina,
Pulau Bidong. This study used three type of lures; which are fish mill, fish waste and
green water, buried in the coral reef area. A total of 74 polychaete samples were
obtained; consist of family Nereididae. Fish waste trap have the highest number of
polychaetes obtained (54) followed by green water (10) and fish mill (7). The positive
results obtained have indicated that the use of agar-lure traps in studying the feeding
preference is possible and might reduce the cost, time and damage done from
conventional method in sampling polychaetes.
