Civil societies can play an important role in conservation. Thus, a CBO should
ideally have members that correspond to the criteria of conservationist.
Sahabat Setiu is an active CBO in Setiu Wetlands. This study was conducted in
order to develop an assessment tool on the quality of members of Sahabat
Setiu as conservationist in Setiu Wetlands, to assess the quality of Sahabat
Setiu members as conservationist and to identify factors that influence the
quality as conservationist. An assessment tool was developed based on the
literature review on criterias to be a conservationist. In-depth interview was
conducted with the respondents which were members of Sahabat Setiu.
Preliminary results indicated that 13%, 65% and 32% of respondents have low,
moderate, and high quality respectively. Results obtained can be used to
identify what kind of improvement Sahabat Setiu needs to do to ensure the
quality of their membership.
