A Study of the Otolith of Clupeidae in Malaysia

Otolith is a calcium carbonate structure in the inner ear of fish that can be used for
population parameter of fish. The study aims are to illustrate the morphology of
Clupeidae and relationship between dimension and weight of the otolith with the fish
size. The otolith extracted by using 4 extraction method. The shape of otolith for
species Sardinella albella was sagitta and it is ovate, the otolith size is small, and the
otolith was not thick. This study found that the strong coefficient determination
between otolith length with otolith width for species Anodontostoma chacunda while
it strong coefficient determination were between total weight with weight of otolith
for species Sardinella albella. This finding for future study on fish stock assessment
involving the use of otolith analysis.
