Wetland Cover Changes in Terengganu (1998-2014)

Wetland provides a lot of ecosystem services such as water purification, flood
protection, fish and wildlife habitat, and shoreline stabilization. Wetland cover
changes mapping is very important in identifying wetlands changes. In
Terengganu, the wetland area is slowly loss mainly due to conversion for
economic benefits. There was little information on the latest covers of wetlands
in Terengganu and it needs to be updated. The objectives of this study are to
determine the wetland cover in Terengganu between 16 years (1998-2014)
based on vegetation cover and to update wetland cover map for Terengganu
based on the above data. Remote sensing and geographic information system
(GIS) techniques were used in this study. Satellite images of Terengganu were
acquired from 1998, 2005 and 2014. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index
(NDVI) was applied to monitor vegetation. The overall high NDVI values for the
1998, 2005 and 2014 images were 0.94, 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. This study
implies that remote sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS)
techniques provide a useful tool for studies in wetland cover changes.
