The Fishermen Income Based on Fishing Gear Used In Marang

This study was carried out at Marang, Terengganu to know the type of fishing gear
used by fishermen and their income. Slovin’s formula had been used to calculate the
total population of fishermen in Marang and data was collected by survey on 50
respondents which consist of Malay fishermen. The result of the study revealed that
the dominant type of fishing gear used there were hook and line, gillnet and purse
seine. The average income of fishermen was RM1150 for hook and line, RM1350 for
gillnet and RM2622 for purse seine which showed that purse seine generated the
highest income for fishermen. Generally, the income was not fixed as it depend on the
number of catch for each fisherman’s trip, which also affected by season.
