A Study on the Otolith of Scombridae in Malaysia

The information on otolith characteristics is important for future otolith based study
such as age determination and growth parameters estimation. This study aims to
describe the of otolith morphology for Scombridae and to determine the relationship
between otolith size and fish size. Otoliths were extracted using “open the hatch
method”. Illustration of the otolith was observed under Scanning Electron Microscope
(SEM), stereomicroscope and dissecting microscope aided camera lucida. The shapes
of otolith for species in Scombridae were approximately rectangular and also
rectangular to oblong. Relationships between fish standard length and otolith weight,
width and length were described by linear regression models and high correlation was
shown for all relationships. This study found that the correlation between fish size and
otolith size for Rastrelliger kanagurta, Thunnus tonggol and Euthynnus affinis are low.
The finding from this study can be helpful for future otolith-based assessment
research.
