Biodegradability of palm oil derivatives in seawater<br />

The study was conducted using (RBD) palm olein and natural seawater.<br />

Bacterial growth and biodegradation were evaluated in shaking flasks at<br />

different concentrations (5g/L & 10g/L) and incubated at 28 ± ℃ with a speed<br />

of 120 rpm for 28 days. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and biochemical<br />

oxygen demand (BOD) in seawater were determined using standard methods.<br />

The concentration of fatty acid of interest which are myristic acid, palmitic acid,<br />

stearic acid, and oleic acid in residual oil was determined using GC-FID. The<br />

study shows COD released increased rapidly till day 28 and the highest level<br />

released was 668.67mg/L and 679.50 mg/L. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD)<br />

was 1.24 mg O2/L and dissolved oxygen decreased 20% over 5 days of<br />

incubation. The marine bacterial population growth increased rapidly.GC-FID<br />

results show that the concentration of fatty acids decreased; palmitic decreased<br />

52%, stearic acid decreased 27% and oleic acid decreased 36%.<br />
