Bird Diversity at the Coastal Area of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu

This study of avifauna was conducted at the coastal area of Universiti Malaysia
Terengganu (UMT) for five months starting from October 2017 until February
2018. The main objectives were to identify the species of birds present at the
coastal area of UMT and to update the existing checklist of bird species. The
point observation method was use involving 1000 meters long transect. A total
of 24 species of birds from 17 families were recorded whereas the total number
of sightings was 560. Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) was the common
species found at the coastal area with a number of 105 sightings. According to
the monthly observation, highest number of birds sighting were recorded in
February 2018. The presence of bird species were influenced by some factors
such as weather and habitat. There was a decline in the number of bird species
at the coastal area of UMT.
