Bird Diversity at the Coastal Area of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu<br />

This study of avifauna was conducted at the coastal area of Universiti Malaysia<br />

Terengganu (UMT) for five months starting from October 2017 until February<br />

2018. The main objectives were to identify the species of birds present at the<br />

coastal area of UMT and to update the existing checklist of bird species. The<br />

point observation method was use involving 1000 meters long transect. A total<br />

of 24 species of birds from 17 families were recorded whereas the total number<br />

of sightings was 560. Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) was the common<br />

species found at the coastal area with a number of 105 sightings. According to<br />

the monthly observation, highest number of birds sighting were recorded in<br />

February 2018. The presence of bird species were influenced by some factors<br />

such as weather and habitat. There was a decline in the number of bird species<br />

at the coastal area of UMT.<br />
