Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a type of biodegradable plastic which can be
synthesized by bacteria under limited nutrient and excess carbon source. The
main issue that hamper the commercialization and successful of PHA is high
production cost. Thus, renewable carbon sources such as sucrose, glucose,
fructose and palm oil were used. The objectives for this study are to isolate and
identify PHA producing bacteria from the mangrove sediment and to determine
the intracellular of PHA content and monomer using gas chromatography
analysis. All bacteria isolated from mangrove sediment in University Malaysia
Terengganu were screened to determine potential PHA-producing bacteria
using Nile blue A. The results showed that there were no positive PHA producing
bacteria. This can be concluded that there is no bacteria strains that capable of
producing PHA in mangrove sediment at UMT. Lastly, I would recommend that
further study should not been done here.
