Diversity of Odonata in Sekayu Recreational Park, Terengganu<br />

Study on the abundance, species richness and diversity of Odonata fauna in<br />

Sekayu lowland forest was conducted between July and October 2017. Total of<br />

608 individuals of Odonata belonging to 11 families and 42 species recorded<br />

during study period. Libellulidae was the most dominant family with 13 species<br />

constituting 45% of the total recorded individuals of odonates and the most<br />

common species was Neurothemis fluctuans constituting 14% of total number<br />

of individuals. Contrarily, Stylogomphus malayanus, Dsyphea dimidiata, and<br />

Podolestes orientalis were recorded less abundant species during study period.<br />

Maximum species numbers and individuals of Odonata were recorded in<br />

October. This inventory served as the baseline for Odonata communities in<br />

Sekayu lowland forest. It is recommended increasing the education on the<br />

importance of using local insect species as first level indicators of environmental<br />

health which when improved upon can save the nation fortunes otherwise<br />

usage of chemical evaluation and monitoring of the environment.<br />
