Nest Site Preference of Painted Terrapins in Terengganu Coast

Painted terrapin or Callagur borneoensis is among Malaysia’s most critically
endangered species on IUCN red list 2002. The nesting behaviour pattern was studies
with focus its relation to beach morphology and sediment characteristics that suits
their nesting activity. Five beaches were chosen in Terengganu coast and the findings
shows that beach with moderate slope and small sand particle size have increasing
number of nest than beach with steep slope and larger sand particle size. It is hoped
that the findings will benefit terrapins’ conservation program and provide more data
for the government and related agencies to justify the need to conserve the suitable
areas for the nesting site of painted terrapins.
