Willingness to Pay for Coral Reef Preservation Program by Tourist at
Perhentian Island

Coral reefs are very important for marine life. The extinction of coral reefs began
drastically since the beginning of the century and studies by the United Nations (UN)
have found that coral reef ecosystems have shrunk faster than anticipated scientists.
Thus, this study was conducted to identify the payable capacity that focused on the
maintenance of coral reefs in Perhentian Island, Terengganu. Data used is primary
data by using questionnaire distribution instrument of 70 respondents from amongst
tourists. Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is used to estimate the ability to pay for
coral reef preservation. The results showed that 63 respondents agreed to pay the
program with the average each respondent willing to pay from RM10 to RM20.
Besides, 21.4% of respondents are willing to pay RM10 for this program. The
willingness to pay for the program is also influenced by the age and income of tourists.
The coral reef preservation program has the potential to be implemented in
cooperation with tourists.
