Willingness to Pay for Reducing Coastal Erosion Project:
Case Study in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu

Malaysia is a country surrounded by coastal areas exposed to natural phenomena such
as coastal erosion. This phenomenon often occurs on the East Coast of Malaysia
especially when it comes to the monsoon season. However, human intervention such
as coastal development is also capable of altering the physical process of the beach
causing erosion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of Kuala Nerus
people’s willingness to pay for the project to reduce coastal erosion. Interview method
using a questionnaire on 100 respondents among selected Kuala Nerus residents was
conducted. The result shows that on average, respondents are willing to pay RM 30.56
for the program. Logit model approach was used to identify significant variables for
this study and found that income, government, men and low education respondents
were significant. Therefore, several recommendations have been proposed to help in
preserving Kuala Nerus beach from getting seriously eroded.
