TEMPORAL CHANGES IN MANGROVE VEGETATION OF UNIVERSITI

A mangrove forest species and spatial extent study had been conducted at Universiti
Malaysia Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu. Mangrove in UMT has brought significant
benefits to the study of mangrove. Increasing development contributed to a
considerable loss of mangrove forests. This study was meant to observe temporal
changes of mangrove forest area between the year 2007 and 2017. Satellite images
from SPOT 5 and SPOT 7 with resolution of 1.5m and 2.5m spatial resolution used to
produce classification map and change detection analysis were done for mapping of
mangrove in UMT. The data were processed through four main steps: (1) data preprocessing
including atmospheric correction and geometric correction, (2) image
classification using supervised classification approach, (3) accuracy assessment for the
classification results, and (4) change detection analysis. Based on these results,
Mangrove in UMT can be continuously monitored to achieve sustainable development
and maintaining the diversity of mangrove in campus area.
