Political Participation among Youths Using Social Media

The development of information technology with the use of social media such as
YouTube, Twitter and Facebook create a new atmosphere in the political world.
According to previous studies, the youth are less interested in politics. With the
presence of the internet especially social media, it provides opportunities for youths
especially students to engage in politics. Therefore, this study aims to find out the
level of social media use for political activities among youths. This study collected
primary data by using survey among 170 respondents who are third year students at
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. The data shows that political awareness among
students is still low although they are exposed to social media. The analysis shows
there is a significant relationship between social media usage motives with
respondents' participation offline and online. However, the link is weak, indicating that
political awareness among students is still low. While t-test analysis shows that there
is a significant difference between gender and political participation, as well as
interpersonal and youth political participation by using social media.
