After we were only able to taste the matured
wines of the Markgräfler Winzer
co-op’s prestige range last year, we
were now able see more of their broader range
– and what a range it is: ever since the co-op left
the notions of the former “Bezirkskellerei”, or
regional winery, behind, they have looked
ahead to the future. Under the direction of
Hagen H. Rüdlin, this cooperative makes very
fairly-priced wines from 940 hectares of vineyards
that do not have to fear comparison with
wines from private estates. An intelligent and
ambitious business model for a co-op – not just
for Baden. Big compliment!

Still yeasty on the nose, discreet varietal aromas, grain and
scents of limestone. On the palate very well-balanced, powerful,
ripe acidity, slightly salty, slightly supple, has a bit of
everything and maintains great balance. An extremely refined

Some citrus fruit, herbs, some wood, a little spontaneous fermentation,
but not too demanding. Smooth setting, ripe
acidity, a hint of phenolics, lots of juiciness, medium extract
density, a rather good country wine, close to the conventional

Spätburgunder trocken
Clear new wood, dark berry, elderberry, juniper, conifer and
pepper. Full on the palate, fine-grained tannins in a powerful
amount albeit slightly stemmy, tactile mineral tones, acidity
well-suited to the body. Aromatically still closed, built for
bottle ageing. 13 Vol.-%. cork, €€
91 2018 »DER« Spätburgunder Landwein tr.
Ripe fruit, sultana, very ripe raspberry and wild strawberry and a
hint of malt. On the palate quite relaxed and silky to creamy tannin,
ripe acidity, fruity accompaniment, the warmth of the year
is noticeable, but is staged quite elegantly by mild flow.

First development on the nose: chocolatey, latte with the
clear use of wood followed by almond notes, redcurrants
and herbs. Rather more "German" Spätburgunder than Pinot
Noir, but complex. Finely-textured tannins on the palate,
ripe acidity, smooth foundation. 13,5 Vol.-%, cork, €€
