Nico Espenschied is amongst the creative
minds of the winemaker scene
and always has new projects on the
go. This time he surprised us with Manzoni Bianco,
an Italian crossing of Riesling and Pinot
Blanc. The wine fermented for five and a half
months on its skins in a stone vessel and was
then “left to its own devices” for 18 months in
a small, used barrel, as Espenschied reports.
He vinified a second batch in a 500-litre barrel
and only added minimal sulphur dioxide. This
resulted in two compelling, individual wines.
We salute this courageous and imaginative
winemaker.

Full-bodied, round, fresh on the nose. deliciously smoky, a little
grassy. Intricate on the palate with fine density and lightness.
Juicy, fresh light fruit, lively acidity, fine saltiness, delicious

fine phenolic nose of peach, yellow spiciness, wild rose and

with juiciness, tart, tannic notes and freshness on the

Focused, yet balanced with herbal spice, an ethereal hint, fine
grip, vegetal notes and dark fruit. Intricate on the palate, fresh
dark cherry and spiciness. Fine phenolics, direct acidity. Depth
meets tension, spice and freshness. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€€

Cabernet Franc trocken
Violet nuances, dark berries, herbal components, clear, spicy,
something ethereal and a hint of drying wood. Nuanced on the
palate. Fresh, concentrated, fruit extract, still quite grippy tannin,
astringency and lively, juicy acidity. 14 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€

Espenschied trocken
Juicy, full-bodied and fresh, meadow herb, some blossom,
stone, juicy apple, peach and a hint of smokiness. On the
palate fresh, sweet fruit and vegetal notes. Fine grip, juicy
acidity. Invigorating and appetising.
