The fact that the highest scoring wine of
the Trockene (i.e. dry) Schmitts is a
sweet wine, namely their Rieslaner
Beerenauslese, may be strange, but certainly
does not warrant a name change for the estate:
for one thing, the dry wines are exquisite, for
another, they really are properly dry, something
the Schmitt family manages to deliver
year in, year out. We especially liked the Riesling
and Silvaner “Grosse Gewächse’’, full of
character. The savoury Silvaner Spätlese is our
Falstaff-Tip and the emphatically dry Spätlese
of Gewürztraminer is a wine you have to try!

Sonnenstuhl Riesling trocken
Herbal spice on the nose, also walnut, ripe apricot and some
smoke and liquorice. Dense and concentrated on the palate with a
firm structure and lots of substance, soft, supple acidity, juice and
salty notes with essence of citrus fruits. Good balance of all the elements,
lots of wine, real potential. 13,5 Vol.-%. screwcap, €€€

Grapefruit on the nose. Highly concentrated on the palate, a
penetrating acidity, downright biting with a powerful sweetness.
Immensely young and closed, not yet complex at present,

Intensive herbal spice on the nose, dark, toasty aromas, juniper
berry, ripe pear and flowers. Juicy on the palate, texture,
subsequently showing substance and also power, dense core
and well trained vigour. A Silvaner that is great with hearty

Gewürztraminer Spätlese trocken
Varietal aromas of rose petals and ripe yellow fruit, lychee
and mango. On the palate there is power and good substance
and density, spicy, juicy and a long finish. Shows the advantages
of Gewürztraminer in a markedly dry form. Pairs well

Silvaner Spätlese trocken
On the powerful nose there are aromas of ripe pear and
also yellow fruit, flowers, spice and floral notes. On the palate,
it is full-bodied and juicy, powerful with well-judged
strength, well-integrated acidity, spiciness and also mineral
